In October 2012 we gave $10,000 to Canterbury University for its appeal to fund Emerging Leaders Scholarships. Here is a picture of Club President Murray Compton presenting the cheque to Dr.Rod Carr, Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Murray presenting cheque to University

In accepting the cheque on behalf of the University, Dr. Carr said that the University faces one of its toughest challenges yet. The Emerging Leaders Scholarships are essential to attract top quality students, assist students financially and to revive student numbers and increase revenue [following the Christchurch earthquakes]. A $5,000 entrance scholarship represents income to the University of $40,000 based on a three year degree.

"The University is one of Christchurch's largest employers and contributors to the local economy so it is very much in our interests to provide this support. It also recognises the involvement which the Club, our members and families have with the University" said President Murray.

Riccarton Rotary donates $10,000 to NZ Coastguard

The Rotary Club of Riccarton has donated $10,000 to the Canterbury region of NZ Coastguard. Noel Strez - Past President - presented the cheque to the President of Coastguard Canterbury Greg Skene at their offices in Riccarton Road.

Greg stated that the money will be used to purchase new motors for their rescue vessel Pub Charity Canterbury Rescue. The motors are replaced every 4 years at a cost of nearly $80,000 because as Greg said "they have to be reliable, they have to start first time, people's lives may depend on it.
